This adaptable oil has been widely used since antiquity, when it was thought to keep evil spirits at bay. The essential oil is strong when pure but when diluted sweetens. It comes from a perennial shrub covered in tiny hairs, which bears small pink flowers and has pointed, serrated leaves from which we obtain the essential oil, though all parts of the plant are scented. The plant is native to Africa but is now cultivated in many parts of the world, as a house plant as well as commercially for its oil. Production or the oil is centred mainly in Reunion; other producers include France, Italy, China, and Egypt.
