Frankincense (also known as olibanum) is an inspiring and contemplative oil that comes from the gum of a small tree or shrub grown mainly in the Middle East, with most of the oil produced in Iran and Lebanon.
The gum is extracted by incising the trunk and peeling away the bark. The oozing juice slowly hardens on contact with the air and is then collected for distillation.
The gum was highly prized in ancient times and was known simply by the old French name franc encens, “frank” meaning luxuriant.
Frankincense is known primarily in its biblical connection as one of the three gifts to the infant Jesus; at that time its value was almost as great as the value of gold. In Ancient Egypt it was used as an incense in religious ceremonies and in cosmetics, where it was valued for its rejuvenating properties.
